Les débuts du XVIIe siècle voient se multiplier les jardins princiers en même temps que les cabinets de curiosités; dans l'enthousiasme botanique des années 1630, une vague de tulipomania déferle sur l'Europe, excitant la verve satirique de La Bruyère. Allemands, Français, Hollandais, Italiens, Scandinaves, sillonnent alors les mers à la recherche de plantes rares et de spécimens inconnus sur le pourtour de la Méditerranée, aux Amériques et jusqu'en Extrême-Orient ou au fin fond du Pacifique. Les dessinateurs qui fixent la luxuriance ou les raretés végétales de ces contrées lointaines ne reviendront pas toujours de ces expéditions: on connaît la fin tragique de l'expédition de Lapérouse, en 1788; un siècle plus tôt, un navire hollandais coulé par un bateau français sombre avec une somme botanique inestimable décrivant 1200 plantes de l'île d'Amboine... dont une copie nous est providentiellement parvenue! A la même époque, Maria Sibylla Merian part hardiment, seule avec sa fille, dessiner la faune et la flore du Surinam. Madeleine Pinault Sorensen, spécialiste éminente du dessin scientifique des XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles, brosse ici une fresque érudite de ce monde foisonnant des savants, dessinateurs, éditeurs et mécènes. Elle souligne le rôle capital du dessin, outil d'observation directe mais aussi de transmission du savoir botanique, et détaille les innovations techniques dans la gravure et l'impression qui permettent aux éditeurs et libraires de diffuser plus largement ce savoir grâce à des images toujours plus parfaites. Complété par 40 pages de sources et références bibliographiques, l'ouvrage est riche aussi d'une centaine d'illustrations, dont 48 planches en couleurs aussi éblouissantes que variées dans leur approche de la botanique, de Redouté au père Plumier en passant par Johann Walter ou Nicolas Robert: lis martagon, fleur de la Passion, pivoine, fleur de bananier, rose de Noël, dragonnier... illustrent avec bonheur cette approche savante de la botanique.

Drukwerk speelde een zeer belangrijke rol in de Europese expansie en de globalisering van de vroegmoderne wereld. Aan de hand van boeken en gravures leerden de Europeanen beschavingen kennen die aan de andere kant van de wereld bloeiden en slechts door een handvol conquistadores, kolonisten of missionarissen werden bezocht. Anderzijds was het gedrukte boek het medium bij uitstek om de Europese cultuur naar verre gebieden over te brengen. In dit proces fungeerden de Zuidelijke Nederlanden - en dan voornamelijk Antwerpen - als speerpunt. Dit boek wil de aanwezigheid en het gebruik van Zuid-Nederlands drukwerk in het Spaanse en Portugese wereldrijk in kaart brengen. Ruim twintig internationaal gerenommeerde auteurs buigen zich over de handel in drukwerk uit de Nederlanden, ontleden de verspreiding van de Zuid-Nederlandse kennis en technologie met betrekking tot het drukken van boeken, gravures en kaarten in Amerika en Azië, en werpen een licht op de kennisverspreiding via een collectievorming van Zuid-Nederlands drukwerk in de overzeese gebieden van Spanje en Portugal.
